Road Safety & Accident Prevention
Road accidents account for a substantial loss of life and lead to a huge number of injuries - many of which are of a permanent character. Road accidents also represent a serious cost to society of the magnitude of 1 to 3% of GNP in most countries. As such, Road Safety and Accident Prevention is regarded by Consia as an essential factor in a country’s growth and a necessary condition for sustainable development.
It is essential that road safety be approached on a national scale. Legislation must include safety issues, and it is recommended that a national coordinating entity be established with power and resources to implement road safety activities. Institutions working in the area should be strengthened to include safety aspects in their daily work concerning their structure and methodologies, as well as human resource capabilities. A budget line for road safety should also be secured.
Consia has carried out the establishment of national action plans, strengthening of institutions and accident information systems and the design of improvements on specific road sections. Consia has extensive experience with road safety auditing which is an assessment of a road project's accident prevention potential.Consia has carried out audits in three continents defining simultaneously how each audit could be utilised from a long-term perspective by local road safety engineers.
